Gender-based violence encompasses various forms of violence and discrimination rooted in an individual’s gender or gender identity. Here, we shed light on commonly observed manifestations of gender-based violence

1. Domestic Violence

This pertains to acts of violence occurring within the context of intimate or familial relationships, encompassing physical, sexual, or psychological abuse.

2. Sexual Violence

This umbrella term encompasses non-consensual sexual activities or behaviors like rape, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and any other form of such nature.

3. Intimate Partner Violence

 Also referred to as spousal or partner abuse, this refers to violence transpiring within existing or past intimate relationships. It encompasses physical, sexual, or emotional abuse.

4. Human Trafficking

A grave concern, this involves the recruitment, transportation, transfer, or harboring of individuals for exploitation through force, coercion, or deceit. Such exploitation may include forced labor, sexual exploitation, or other forms of servitude.

5. Forced Marriage

This refers to marriages where one or both parties are compelled into matrimony without their free and full consent. Coercion can manifest physically, emotionally, or psychologically.

6. Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C)

This destructive practice involves the partial or complete removal of external female genitalia or causing injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons. Often performed on young girls, it inflicts severe physical and psychological harm.

7. Honor Killings

A deeply disturbing phenomenon, honor killings involve the murder of individuals, primarily women, who are deemed to have brought shame or dishonor upon their family or community.

8. Street Harassment

Unwanted sexual comments, gestures, or actions perpetrated in public spaces fall into this category. It spans from catcalling and whistling to groping or even sexual assault.

9. Cyber Harassment

A modern-day menace, cyber harassment involves the use of digital communication technologies such as social media, email, or text messages to intimidate, threaten, or torment individuals based on their gender.

10. Discrimination and Institutional Violence

This encompasses unequal treatment, exclusion, or violence directed at individuals due to their gender or gender identity. Such discrimination can materialize in various domains, including education, employment, healthcare, or legal systems.

It is vital to acknowledge that these forms of gender-based violence can impact people of all genders, although women and girls tend to bear a disproportionate burden.
