Uric Acid and Gout Diet: Avoid These Trigger Foods for Healthier Life

If you happen to be one of those unfortunate souls plagued by an excess of uric acid or the dreadfully painful condition known as gout, then it would be in your best interest to exercise caution when it comes to the consumption of certain delectable delights that could elevate your uric acid levels or provoke those excruciating gout flare-ups.

Purine-Rich Foods

Stay away from organ meats like liver, kidney etc. as they are packed with purines, which turn into uric acid in the body. It’s better to avoid or restrict consumption of these meats.

While not as loaded with purines as organ meats, red meat (beef, lamb,) can still contribute to the production of uric acid. It’s wise to consume it moderately and opt for lean cuts.

Shellfish and other Seafoods

Be cautious with certain types of seafood like anchovies, sardines, mussels, scallops, and herring as they are abundant in purines. It’s best to limit or avoid them altogether. On the other hand, seafood such as shrimp and crab have moderate purine levels and can be enjoyed in moderation.

It is recommended to limit the intake of shellfish such as lobster, oysters, and shrimp as they contain varying levels of purines.

Sugary Fruits, Vegetable and Drinks

Exercise moderation when consuming certain fruits with elevated fructose content like sweetened fruit juices, oranges, grapefruits, strawberries, and raspberries, as they can contribute to increased uric acid levels.

Although vegetables are generally beneficial, it is important to consume certain ones such as asparagus, spinach, cauliflower, mushrooms, and peas in moderation due to their moderate to high purine content.

To manage uric acid levels, it is also prudent to limit or eliminate the consumption of sugary beverages like soda and fruit juices that contain high-fructose corn syrup and excessive sugar.

Processed Food

The presence of yeast and yeast extracts in various food items such as bread, pastries, and certain condiments like bouillon cubes used for making broth or sauces can contribute to the rise of uric acid levels in the body.

It is wise to minimize the consumption of added sugars, processed foods, and refined carbohydrates as they have been linked to increased uric acid levels. Opting for a reduced intake of these food items is strongly advised.

Alcohol and Beer

Beer and Alcohol: If you are prone to gout attacks, it is advisable to restrict or avoid alcohol consumption, specifically beer, as it can elevate uric acid levels.
